Ajay Devgn: An adaptation can't be 10%/30%/70%

ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? is a screen adaptation of 'Tum Kab Jaaoge Atithi', a short story penned by noted satirist Late Sharad Joshi, for which adequate rights have been purchased. While it wasn't too long back when an entire controversy broke out between Chetan Bhagat, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Raj Kumar Hirani and Aamir Khan over the 'percentage' of adaptation when it came to 3 IDIOTS, how is the team of ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? ensuring that all loose ends are covered? Don't they fear that a week before the release of the film, someone may come knocking the doors and start challenging the 'percentage' of adaptation?

"Arrey yaar, adapation 10%, 30% ya phir 70% nahi ho sakti. Humne toh waise bhi ek short story se poori film banayi hai", laughs Ajay, "We have created an entire screenplay out of a basic idea for which we have made the entire payment as well. Now we are not going to credit on screen that is story ko humne 25% adapt kiya hai ya kuch aur! Rest assured, the credit would be 100%!"

Talking about short stories being converted into full fledged films, we have seen Sanjay Leela Bhansali messing it up in a big way when he picked up a short story and created SAAWARIYA that didn't find many takers. Since the original of ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? is a short story, doesn't it actually become tougher to make an entire film out of it?

"It is a full fledged story for sure and you won't feel that anything has been unnecessarily stretched. It is not just about a character (Paresh Rawal) coming in and the couple (Konkona and I) getting annoyed because of that. There is a lot more that happens and it is interesting to see how this character goes on to change their lives in a big way. Really yaar, you have to watch the film to know in detail about what I am saying. Then you won't have any doubts around how ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? was conceptualized and executed", says Ajay in a confident tone of a man who has not just seen the industry quite closely for two decades now but also knows a thing or two about scripting and execution, courtesy his own stint behind the camera - U ME AUR HUM.
